Kala Pola 2023: A Vibrant Celebration of Art and Culture-
As an artist and architect, I was thrilled to participate in Kala Pola 2023, Sri Lanka's largest open-air art fair, which took place on the picturesque Green Path in Colombo on February 19th. This year marked the event's 30th anniversary – a testament to its enduring impact on the island's art community. Since its inception in 1993, Kala Pola has drawn inspiration from world-renowned outdoor art fairs like 'Montmartre Paris' and 'The Turl Street Art Festival' in Oxford. With the generous support of the 'George Keyt Foundation' and the 'John Keells Group', Kala Pola has grown into Sri Lanka's most prestigious visual art fair, attracting a diverse range of artists and art lovers alike.
A Platform for Growth and Connection-
This year's Kala Pola saw over 300 talented local artists from across Sri Lanka come together, showcasing their artwork and sharing their creative insights. The event was graced by the presence of Australian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and Maldives, Paul Stephens, as the Chief Guest. The bustling atmosphere and impressive turnout demonstrated the public's passion for art and the power of the event to bring people together, fostering connections and friendships.
For me, Kala Pola was an invaluable opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations with fellow artists, collectors, and art enthusiasts, allowing for the exchange of ideas and inspiration. Their feedback and appreciation for my artwork series, exhibited at my stall, further fueled my passion for creating art that resonates with people from all walks of life.
Paintings Inspired by a Diverse Island Nation: A Glimpse into My Stall-
As visitors stepped into my stall at Kala Pola, they were greeted by a thoughtfully curated collection of paintings inspired by the diverse landscapes, cultures, and people of Sri Lanka. Born and raised on this enchanting island nation, I have been captivated by its rich history, from ancient ruins to colonial architecture to bustling cities like Colombo, Galle, Kandy, and Jaffna. My architectural background has only sharpened my appreciation for the world around me and deepened my understanding of the intricate relationships between people, cultures, and their environments.
My collection on display featured both natural landscapes and cityscapes, as well as architectural compositions that highlight ancient buildings, colonial establishments, Bawa Architecture, and modern contemporary structures. My semi-abstract style allowed me to capture the emotions, passions, and beliefs of the people I encounter, as well as the stories and myths that define our diverse communities. Through my artwork, I aim to create a visual narrative that invites viewers to explore and connect with the world on a deeper level.
