"Bhutan's serene landscapes and vibrant hues ignited a spark of inspiration within me; as I embraced this mystical kingdom, the SAARC Artists Camp became the gateway to a profound artistic journey, transcending boundaries and uniting diverse cultures through the power of art."
In the idyllic landscape of Thimphu, Bhutan, the 6th SAARC Artists Camp took place from April 25 to 28, 2016. Organized by the SAARC Cultural Centre and the Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs, Royal Government of Bhutan, the event aimed to create a platform for artists from South Asian countries to share ideas and insights on art in the SAARC region. As one of the seven young artists representing Sri Lanka, I had the privilege to participate in this esteemed art camp and exhibition.
Sri Lanka's Artistry Shines:
It was a tremendous honor to represent my country at this event, having previously received the state award for Fine Art in 2010. The SAARC Artists Camp offered a unique opportunity to connect with other young artists from South Asia, exchange ideas, and draw inspiration from Bhutan's rich culture and breathtaking beauty.
Cultivating Creativity and Delving into Bhutanese Culture:
The camp began with a workshop where all participants engaged in developing their conceptual ideas. These ideas were later translated onto two 5'X3' canvases, exploring themes like "Nature at Its Best" and "Ancient Landscapes" . Visits to various locations such as Do-Chula Pass and Bhutanese Lhakhang's allowed us to immerse ourselves in Bhutan's cultural activities. Additionally, trips to the awe-inspiring Buddha at Kuensel Phodrang and local crafts markets further enriched our experiences, helping us establish connections among participants from different SAARC Member States.
Artistic Talent and Cultural Diversity on Display:
The completed paintings, including those brought by the artists, were showcased at the Namgyel Heritage Conference Hall on the final day of the Artist Camp. This exhibition provided an excellent opportunity to present our artwork to SAARC dignitaries, the general public, and tourists. Some of the paintings were even sold to interested individuals, marking a significant achievement for us.
A Kaleidoscope of Ideas and Creative Expression:
The workshop fostered a vibrant exchange of ideas, concepts, and knowledge among all participants. I gained invaluable insights into various painting and drawing styles from across South Asia, which provided an exceptional opportunity to brainstorm and analyze ideas at an intellectual level. As a result of the three-day workshop, I created a painting titled "Dissimilated Similarity," illustrating my perspective on the relationship between Bhutan and Sri Lanka. The painting featured abstract interpretations of traditional Sri Lankan 'Naga Rakha' masks and Bhutanese 'Tsholing' masks.
One of my paintings caught the attention of the Bhutan-Thailand General Ambassador, who purchased it as a gift for the Queen of Thailand. I was also deeply touched to receive the traditional Bhutanese national costume as a gift from the Ambassador.
An Unforgettable Adventure of Artistic Exploration and Cultural Exchange:
The SAARC Artist Camp concluded on April 28 in Thimphu, with all participants receiving certificates of participation. This journey allowed us to explore Thimphu's temples, Buddhist monuments, and experience local culture, food, and music, creating memories that will last a lifetime. I ended my journey with a profound sense of happiness and accomplishment, having built strong connections with fellow artists and experienced the diverse cultures of the SAARC Region, particularly the enchanting culture of Bhutan.
A Lasting Impact: The 6th SAARC Artists Camp and Beyond:
The experience of participating in the 6th SAARC Artists Camp had a lasting impact on my artistic journey. The shared knowledge and camaraderie among artists from various South Asian countries enriched my understanding of different artistic practices.
"As I reflect on the unforgettable journey of the SAARC Artists Camp in Bhutan, I am reminded that the essence of creativity transcends borders, and the power of art is truly boundless, uniting us all in our shared passion for expression and exploration."
